一、happen的一般用法

作为不及物动词，happen的用法通常出现在如下两个语境：

2. 指由另外一件事而引起某件事

二、happen to与happen on的用法

短语happen to的用法有点复杂，它包含两个内涵：当主语是事物的时候，表示 “某事发生在某人（事）身上”，当主语是人的时候，表示“碰巧、恰巧”。

例1：How would you do if it just happened to you?

如果这件事发生在你身上，你会怎么处理？

例2：I happened to be out when you called.

你打电话的时候，我刚好不在家。

happen on的意思是“偶然发现某事物”，是一个比较书面化、文学化的用法。

例如：I happened on the photo I had looked for for a long time when I was tidying up my drawers.

我在整理抽屉的时候，意外发现了我已经找了很久的那张照片。

三、it happened that...的用法

这个结构很明显是it做形式主语，意思是“that从句中的事情碰巧发生了”。

例如：When I arrived home, it happened that my mom was going shopping.

当我到家的时候，碰巧妈妈正要去购物。

四、happen与occur、take place的用法区别

这三个词都是不及物动词，都不用于被动语态。happen与occur基本都是指“偶然发生”，但occur显得比较正式。而take place 是指一种有计划的发生。

例1：The explosion happened / occurred at 7:30 yesterday morning.

爆炸发生在昨天早上七点半。

例2：Great changes have taken place in my hometown since I left there in 2005.

自从我2005年离开家乡，那里发生了巨大的变化。

occur 比较正式的用语，可用于具体或抽象的事物，通常指按计划或规律在较为确定的时间“发生”的事，在表示具体的事物时，可与happen换用。
如：I'm afraid that this would occur during my absence.
= I'm afraid that this would happen during my absence.
恐怕这事会在我不在时发生。
但是，如果表示“某想法”出现在人的头脑之中，这时不能用happen代替。

我时不时想的那件事你是不是也曾再你头脑中出现过？
happen常指具体事件的发生，特别指那些偶然的或未能预见的“发生”。
比如：
New things are happening all around us.我们身边总有新事发生。
Happen还可表示“碰巧；恰好”之意。
如：It happened that I had no money on me.我刚好没钱了。
take place通常指“(某事)按计划进行或按计划发生。”
比如：
Great changes have taken place in China 发生了翻天覆地的变化。
此外take place还有“举行”之意.
如：
The meeting will take place next Friday.
